3′s the charm

Three chance encounters with random cyclists this morning:
- As we were about to start the ride to work, a reasonably fit looking dude waved to us and started chatting. He turns out to be one of the joy riders. We had a nice chat about riding and schedules and I learnt that he and his small group ride in really wee hours of the morning. I suppose there is something to waking up really early. May be is sets the rest of the day rolling – I am not sure. However, the pleasant conversation on bikes and riding and routes was a good start to the day.
- At midway point of the ride, I passed another rider with flowing hair and riding at a comfortable pace. I was trying to ride hard and did not pay much attention to him. A few minutes later, my brother comes alongside and shouts “Another Surly Rider”. Surly (Long Haul Trucker is the model) if you do not know is the bike I ride. So does my brother. It is a really decent bike an provides a stable ride. The bike takes wide tires and fenders and is nearly perfect for my usage. The best part of the bike is its versatility. People have configured the bike in way too many forms to mention here. Anyway, the feller we bumped into said he does regular tours on his bike. On top, he had his bike equipped with the S&S couplers. These are finely machined and strong removable joints that allows on to pack the bike very small for travel. I was thinking whether I should add them to my bike but gave it a miss since I do not have an immediate need. Anyway, it is rare to see such components in Singapore and I am glad I bumped into him and now know where to look for one
- We parted ways around beach road and as I was rounding up near the F1 pit stop construction area, I saw a couple on fully loaded bikes completely decked with Ortlieb’s and seemingly exploring the region. I did not have time to chat with them but it is good to know that people are out and about.
The sad part is that though I am carrying my camera, I did not manage to take a picture. Duh.

The local dealer is TR Bikes. Talk to Lynten. Very friendly and can advice a good setup.
LHT is a nice bike. I find it rides more stable with / without load than my Cross bike which is faster / lighter. I like both bikes. You should test ride the LHT for yourself to see if you like it or not.
LHT has been getting good press of late and surly makes other interesting designs too. Check out the Big Dummy too when you are at TR bikes, I hear they have some frames in stock.
